While working in the aluminum construction business, we have heard several misconceptions regarding aluminum canopies.  Here are a few myths concerning aluminum canopies and the reasons why these myths are untrue:

Myth 1: Aluminum Canopies are Noisy

Many people think of aluminum canopies as being the old sheet metal canopies.  However, today’s aluminum canopies are installed with solid extruded aluminum that can be walked upon and are a lot less noisy than the sheet metal canopies.  The heavy duty extruded aluminum components eliminate the vibration from the rain and reduce the noise.

Myth 2: Aluminum Canopies Attract Lightning

Even though your aluminum canopy is made of metal, this does not mean that it will attract lightning more than any other material.  In fact, if your aluminum canopy does get struck by lightning, the electricity will disperse and your canopy will not catch on fire because metal is non-combustible. You should always consult with your project electrical engineer and local building code for site specific lighting protection requirements.

Myth 3: Aluminum Canopies Dent and Rust Easily

Aluminum canopies are very durable, corrosion resistant, and can handle any element of Mother Nature.  On the other hand, non-metal materials will begin to deteriorate as soon as they are exposed to the sun, storms, snow, and/or high winds.

Myth 4: Aluminum Canopies are Expensive

In the long run, aluminum canopies are cheaper than their non-metal counterparts.  They remain durable and aesthetically pleasing for long periods of time, so you do not have to worry about replacing them every ten to fifteen years.  Also, they are energy efficient, recyclable, and add value to your property.

Don’t let these common myths fool you!  Aluminum is today’s material of choice in the construction industry.
